Powertrain options at launch comprise two mild petrol hybrids (a first for Tiguan, 130 PS and 150 PS) and one turbocharged 2.0 TDI diesel engine (150 PS); these will be joined by two plug-in eHybrid models (204 PS and 272 PS) in spring 2024. Two turbocharged 2.0 TSI petrol engines (204 PS and 265 PS) will follow later in 2024.
Delivering an unprecedented breadth of powerplant options, the new Tiguan’s line-up of seven engines comprises mild hybrid petrol (eTSI), plug-in hybrid drives (eHybrid), a turbo diesel injection engine (TDI) and turbocharged petrol units (TSI). All are mated to either six- or seven-speed DSG transmissions as standard.
The 1.5-litre evo2 eTSI engines offer either 130 PS/96 kW or 150 PS/110 kW, while the two new eHybrid models provide 204 PS/150 kW or 272 PS/200 kW. The two 2.0-litre TSI petrol units generate 204 PS/150 kW or 265 PS/195 kW and the EA288 series TDI engine outputs 150 PS/110 kW. The most potent TSI engines are mated to the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system as standard.
eHybrid – plug-in hybrid
The new plug-in hybrid comprises a 1.5-litre hi-tech turbocharged petrol engine (1.5 TSI evo2) featuring variable turbocharger geometry (VTG) and efficient TSI evo combustion alongside a new 18.5 kWh battery. Volkswagen forecasts that, using this, the new Tiguan will be capable of returning an electric range of 60 miles between charges, meaning that both versions will offer the option of tailpipe emission-free operation on most average daily journeys. If the 1.5 TSI is also used, and with a full battery and fuel tank, the new Tiguan is capable of more than 620 miles between fuel stops. The battery can be charged at a home wall box or other AC charging point with 11 kW, while both Tiguan eHybrid models can also be charged at DC fast charging stations with up to 50 kW charging capacity.
eTSI – mild hybrid
The two mild hybrid units deliver 130 PS/96 kW or 150 PS/110 kW. These also feature the 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (1.5 TSI evo2), which includes Active Cylinder Management (ACTplus). As a mild hybrid drive, the petrol engine is connected to a 48 V lithium-ion battery and 48 V belt starter generator. The 1.5 eTSI engine offers particularly good performance alongside high efficiency since the engine is repeatedly deactivated thanks to the electrical components. When this occurs, the Tiguan coasts without emissions from the engine.
Alongside optimisation of combustion chamber cooling, the decisive factor here is the symbiosis of VTG turbocharging and the Miller cycle (early closing of the inlet valves with high compression). Thanks to this combustion process, the 1.5 TSI evo2 minimises consumption and emissions. High- pressure injection with 350 bar pressure, plasma-coated cylinder liners for lower internal friction and pistons with cast-in cooling channels to optimise combustion also contribute to the engine’s impressive performance. Both plug-in hybrid versions of the 1.5 TSI deliver their highest power between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm and their maximum torque of 250 Nm between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm.
